Monitoring Cornwall's Wildlife
Fantastic collaborative project with Cornwall Wildlife Trust, Cornwall National Landscapes, and many citizen scientists!
Huge thanks to Cornwall National Landscape and Cornwall Wildlife Trust, to Fowey Rivers Association and Wild Hamatethy for their part in making the day happen, and to Bull & Wolf for the beautiful film, with the whole project funded through the Natural Beauty & The Beast programme thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund. It was a genuine pleasure to be part of it.

We had a wonderful day out recently as part of a citizen science eDNA event, and now that the film has landed we wanted to share it because we love it!
The day formed part of Cornwall National Landscape's Natural Beauty & The Beast programme. A fantastic group of people came to learn eDNA techniques and how returning beavers will shape the landscape in the years to come. We can't thank Laura and Lauren from the Cornwall Wildlife Trust enough for inviting us along. Being able to share eDNA with people and spend some time in the wonderful Cornish landscape is really a dreamy day out for me.
The day was split into an informal eDNA training session where Buffy discussed how eDNA can be used to detect species living in our waterways. The group then went out to several streams to use our eDNA kits to filter water and capture eDNA.
Now in the laboratory we're using single-species qPCR techniques to uncover eDNA signals from European beaver, Eurasian otters and American Mink, results incoming!
The short film below tells the story far better than we can, weaving together the beaver reintroduction and the wildlife monitoring going on around it, and it is well worth a few minutes of your time.
