How we work
We also try to reduce our impact in the way we work day to day. Where possible, we hold meetings online to avoid unnecessary travel. We consider the materials and packaging we order and look for opportunities to reduce waste throughout our work.
We work with a lot of organisations doing important work to protect and understand the natural environment. It's something we're passionate about, and we want to make sure our own working practices reflect that.
eDNA is a brilliant tool for conservation, but collecting and analysing samples requires equipment, plastic consumables and packaging. We know this has an environmental cost, and while some of these materials are difficult to avoid, there are things we can do to reduce our impact.
Our sampling kits
We've been reviewing the packaging we use for our sampling kits and are transitioning from biodegradable plastic bags to compostable pouches.
Previously, our kits were packaged in biodegradable plastic bags containing an additive designed to help the material break down over time. We're now exploring alternative packaging that better reflects our aim to reduce the environmental impact of our kits.
It's a small change, but one we're pleased to be making.
In the lab
Laboratory work inevitably involves single-use plastics and protective equipment. Sample integrity and contamination control are essential to our work, but we also want to make sure we're dealing with the waste as responsibly as we can.
Gloves: Where suitable, we use biodegradable gloves. Where these aren't an option, we send eligible used gloves for recycling through TerraCycle.
Laboratory plastics: We recycle eligible lab plastics through TerraCycle and the TipOne® Recycling Service from Starlab UK.
Reducing waste: We look for ways to avoid unnecessary materials and packaging wherever possible, without compromising the quality or reliability of our work.
