Soil eDNA Kit

Detect vertebrates and invertebrates from soil samples.

Animals shed DNA as they move over and through substrates. Our soil eDNA kits enable you to capture that DNA from various substrates to characterise the biodiversity.

What's in the kit:

  • 1 x Surface soil corer

  • Nitrile gloves

  • 1 x 50 mL tube with DNA preservative buffer

  • Parafilm

  • Collection pot

  • Instructions

What you'll need:

  • Rubber mallet and bleach cloth

Optional extras:

  • Smartphone or GPS to capture site location coordinates (lat/long), or What3Words

  • Pencil

  • Permanent marker

Species we regularly monitor with our soil eDNA kits:
Single-species qPCR
£140 +VAT
Sterile soil sample kit
Each additional species

Up to three species per sample.

Multi-species metabarcoding
£22.50 +VAT
£35 +VAT

Our pricing follows a tiered model. As project size increases, the cost per sample decreases. Tiered pricing begins at 50 or more samples and reduces again for projects over 200 samples.

Projects with < 50 samples:

Sampling Tips

Robust eDNA surveys rely on being able to avoid and monitor any potential cross contamination between sites and samples.

  1. Soil eDNA sample kits are sealed and sterile until opened. Only open one kit at a time. When you have finished collecting the sample, put all kit contents back into the kit bag. This prevents transport of eDNA between sites.

  2. Put on your gloves before unsealing the collection pot. Whilst you have your gloves on avoid touching anything unnecessary. Change gloves between kits, even if sampling the same site with multiple kits.

  3. Any reusable equipment such as a rubber mallet should be wiped down with a cloth between samples.

  4. Surveys over five samples have field controls included for free. Collecting field controls ensures robust results.

Survey design

DNA is not homogenised in soil. A sample collected 10 cm away can be as different as once collected 100 m away. For this reason each sample is comprised of four sub-samples and we recommend a high intensity sampling strategy.
