Terrestrial eDNA Kit

Detect vertebrates and invertebrates from surface samples.

Animals shed DNA as they move over surfaces. Our terrestrial eDNA kits enable you to capture that DNA from branches, hedgerows, den boxes, roosts and hard to reach areas.

What's in the kit:

  • 2 x sterile rollers

  • Nitrile gloves

  • 2 x 50 mL tubes with DNA preservative buffer

  • Parafilm

  • Roller handle

  • Instructions

What you'll need:

  • Extra-long roller handle

Optional extras:

  • Smartphone or GPS to capture site location coordinates (lat/long), or What3Words

  • Pencil

  • Permanent marker

  • Bleach cloth

Species we regularly monitor with our terrestrial eDNA kits:

Up to three species per sample.

Multi-species metabarcoding

Our pricing follows a tiered model. As project size increases, the cost per sample decreases. Tiered pricing begins at 50 or more samples and reduces again for projects over 200 samples.

Projects with < 50 samples:

Robust eDNA surveys rely on being able to avoid and monitor any potential cross contamination between sites and samples.

  1. Terrestrial eDNA sample kits are sealed and sterile until opened. Only open one kit at a time. When you have finished collecting the sample, put all kit contents back into the kit bag. This prevents transport of eDNA between sites.

  2. Put on your gloves before unsealing the rollers. Whilst you have your gloves on avoid touching anything unnecessary. Change gloves between kits, even if sampling the same site with multiple kits.

  3. Any reusable equipment such as sampling poles should be wiped down with a cloth soaked in 10% bleach between samples.

  4. Surveys over five samples have field controls included for free. Collecting field controls ensures robust results.

Sampling Tips

Survey design

DNA is not homogenised in terrestrial environments. For this reason each sample is comprised of ten sub-samples and we recommend a high intensity sampling strategy.
